Another offering from the talented Eric Nicolas in the Loire Valleys Jasnières AOC.
The Calligramme is produced from Chenin Blanc grapes over 50 years of age on clay soils over limestone with pockets of flint. Hand picked with a maximum yield of 35hL with wild ferment in old oak.
A richer offering than its stablemate “Les Rosiers”…..in fact, I think I prefer the Les Rosiers for its lean speed and clean lines….that is not to take anything away from the Calligramme though…it is a lovely wine.
Pale yellow gold with aromas of rich dried fruits, quince, lemon curd, green crunchy apples, marzipan, soft spice and quiet vanillan nuances….some creamy leesy in there maybe also?
Rich, snappy stone fruits with quince and citrus bursts on the palate, again with some almond paste, spice and light vanillan notes. Just off dry on the finish with a pleasant minerally line and lingering creamy, almost mealy finish.
Both the Calligramme and the Les Rosiers show great detail, are sleek, streamlined and stand upon a bed of bright, minerally goodness…..Bonneville Racers.
